Citizens' Union went into great detail, the many peculiar deals of “the Sullivans.”

There were five Sullivans. I only knew two - “Big Tim” and Christy. Then there was “Little Tim” whom I also knew slightly, but he was much less of a character. There were two others who were either brothers or uncles and I think that one of them was at least one generation older than “Big Tim.” They had been in the usual game, I suppose, that protected whoever needed protection. They shook down the contractors. Anyhow that was what was said. “Big Tim” was nevertheless a man of great kindness.

Benjamin Clarke Marsh represented the single-taxers. He was a single-taxer, but the organization he represented was not exclusively a single-tax organization. It had to do with housing and things like that at the time. It was much less sober than Lawson Purdy's outfit. Ben Marsh was exotic, erratic and dramatic. He was the one who got up the great housing show which was held in the Museum of Natural History.

I talked to Tim and the others and they talked to me a lot about Sulzer. They told me their views on him and they told me what they knew on him. It was little by little that I pieced these things together. I wasn't paying attention much, because I was interested in getting to talk about my bill.
