up young person and that he was behaving correctly. But he was disagreeable. He stood out for being a little disagreeable. I thought it was funny that he didn't have more fun with the Sullivans. It seemed to me that if I had been in his position, I would have gotten to know the Sullivans real well, because of their being interesting human beings, interesting characters. I never knew them well enough to ask them about their boyhood back ground, but if I'd been a man serving in the Senate with them, I'm sure I would have had a glass of beer with them and gotten them to tell me what times were like on the old Bowery.
Franklin Roosevelt had none of that. And they didn't like him. What struck me about him was that he wasn't being liked by his colleagues in the Senate. They just weren't getting warm to him, although many of them respected him very much. I think that Josiah Newcomb and Mayhew Wainwright both got on with him, were closer to him and felt more personal kinship to him than the others did. They were both Republicans - Westchester County Republicans. They really understood him. They understood what he was driving at. I don't know whether he was driving at political effect, or what, but at any rate they were on that side of the argument. At that time I don't think I would have thought
