NEW YORK: CONSUMERS' LEAGUE: 54-HOUR BILL: TRIANGLE FIRE: FACTORY INVESTIGATION COMMISSION.

In New York I devoted the first year, 1909, entirely to the university and to the fellowship project which I was to use for my master's thesis. I still began to make connections primarily with people interested in trade unions. I lived part of the time on the West Side at what is called Hartley House, and, after a few months, at Greenwich House, which is in Jones Street further downtown. Around each of these houses, but particularly at Greenwich House, there was a great interest in trade unions.

The project on which I was engaged on a fellowship basis and from which I was to draw the material for my thesis was a project financed by the Russell Sage Foundation - a survey really of the mid-West Side in the forties and fifties in New York, commonly known as Hell's Kitchen. I was to do a social survey of it - the people, the opportunities, the schools, the social institutions. My chore, which I selected with the advice of my academic advisors as well as those running the project, was the causes of truancy in the public school system in that area.
