high-handed with Congress. I began to realize that and think, “Well, we did act pretty rapidly. I never did things this way in New York. I always took things up with the committee heads in advance of a piece of legislation going over. I saw that the leaders knew about it. I paid attention to them. I think we should do the same thing here. I should attempt to establish some warm relationship.”

Also, I had been sort of stunned by the exaggerated publicity which had been made by the newspaper people over the fact that Pat Harrison had had to wait when he came to see me. There was no ill will on Harrison's part; he perfectly understood the situation and it was all right between us, but I was a little bit hurt by the publicity that I wasn't nice to Senators. Some Congressman had also said after I testified on the CCC Bill that I'd made a good appearance, but he'd hate to be married to me. That had been made a lot of and some people said, “Congressmen don't like her.” Some newspaper people just drew their conclusions from that.

So I thought to myself, “Now, I will go out of my way this year to be very politic, diplomatic, and to show attention to the members of Congress, showing them special attention and special courtesy.” I would invite them to a series of proper dinners that I would be giving, but I
