were all very careful about that. As a matter of fact, a number of lawyers told me that they were consulted from time to time as to whether it would be libelous to print this. But it was just circulated in this way, an anormous circulation. You couldn't even sue through the mails because you didn't know who did it. It never was done over the nare of a responsible and locatable party.

It was years afterwards that Fiorello LaGuardia dug up the fact that one Robert Edmunds in New York City, who later was picked up during the war as a Nazi agent, was the one who was circulating it. I think he was a halfcrazy man myself and I think that LaGuardia came to that conviction later also. At any rate, he was the one who had circulated both the “Star of David” and this marriage license, although he had had a lot of help from someboy. God knows who.

The Washington Post, through its own exploration, found that the “Star of David” was circulated through the American Vigilante Intelligence Federation of Chicago. I didn't know that at first hand.

At any rate, to finish off this business of this marriage license, it went very broadcast. It was done principally to prove that I was a Jew masquerading under false colors. Before this was circulated a man who said
