Part:         Session:         Page of 912

Silly, I think myself, to have it in Chicago.

Interviewer:

Did you ever talk to Roosevelt about the Vice Presidency, before the convention?

Perkins:

No, I can't remember. This would be the summer of '44. I can't remember whether I ever did or not. I draw a blank there. I don't know.

Interviewer:

Here's the whole question about '44, and it's the same question as it was in '40. There's only one vote that counted, and that's Roosevelt's. So the whole question revolves around, did Wellace have Roosevelt's vote at any time? Your indication here is that Wallace thought he did.

Perkins:

Wallace thought he did, at least I assumed that's what he meant when he said had a talk with the President.

Interviewer:

He might not have.

Perkins:

Well, I think he did. I don't know what he says, but my assumption was then, and it still is, that he had what satisfied him, what he thought was an understanding with the President.

Interviewer:

What was the depth of the split between Roosevelt and Wallace over the Wallace-Jones controversy?
