They'd been flocking around him, and he hadn't had the experience with labor people, you see, that other people had. He was inclined to believe they were a little bit better than other folks, you know--that they were more honorable, that their hearts were in the right place. I don't think he even saw that Beanie Baldwin was way off the center--you know? And it alarmed me, as I say, to see him in the Progressive Party, but I took no part in it. I used to meet his sister Mary here and there, and we used to comiserate each other. Mary was very disturbed about him all through that period, and I think Ilo was, although of course who was completely loyal and stood right by him, went to meetings and sat on the platform.

We'll never know, unless Henry chooses, to reveal it, and I'm not sure that he can. I'm not sure that he himself knows and understands all that entered into his decisions at that time. But certainly they led him up on a high mountain, and showed him the nations of the world. I'm sure that he got that exaltation that comes then. That is what I felt at the time was what had happened to him, you know. That is a very hard temptation to resist. But he ought to have known about it, you know. Just a little more humor would have helped him.

He is such a mature, aware man, and yet there is just this one piece of the jigsaw missing that can cancel
