I had an appointment with him for a considerable talk about the labor items that we had prepared for the San Francisco Conference, to see if he would approve. There must have been other things, too. I had quite a little list of things I had to clear with him.

It was on this occasion that he said to me--he was very lively the day I saw him, very cheerful, very full of pep, and he was getting off to Warm Springs tomorrow or the next day--“Yes, that'll be all right. That'll be all right. Yes--oh that's all right, appoint him, appoint him. I'm going to Warm Springs, and all I'm going to do is, I've got to finish this, and then I'm going to work on my speech for the United Nations. Then I'm going to fly out there and make that speech--but I'm not going to stay, Frances. I'm not going to stay. I'm going to make the speech and I'm going to meet all the delegates, and then I'm going to come right back.”

I said, “Oh, why don't you stay a while?”

“No,” he said. “I want this thing done without me. Much better. It's all fixed, it's all arranged and it'll be much better. I'm not going to take part in it and sort of bully it through. Then I'm coming right back.”

“Then,” he said, “Frances, I'll tell you something,” and he put his hand up to his mouth. “Eleanor and I are going to England!”
