Q:

Could you be more explicit?

Stanton:

No, I just have forgotten about it.

Q:

It would be interesting for history to know. Maybe we'll find the title of it.

Stanton:

Oh, today this would have been in prime time, the world has changed so much. Anyway, these Sisters so impressed him about the importance of what was getting on the air that he didn't know about that there ought to be some system of censorship. It was out of that that he convened this meeting of the three network heads to say “this is the way I want you to do it.”

Q:

Did he make any implicit or explicit threats about what would happen if you didn't follow his directions?

Stanton:

He didn't have to, because if he empowered the FCC to get into it, in my book there was only one thing the FCC could do, which was to put your license up for renewal; or, to cause you to be -- Well, that was the ultimate, to set your license for renewal. There have been very few occasions where that has happened, but it has happened, and I damn well wasn't going to submit to that situation. But, as I say, I had the board meet. I insisted the full board meet, and they met at 5:00 in the afternoon, after the working day was finished so they could all be there. Some of the outside directors thought I was being melodramatic, because they couldn't believe what I was describing could ever take place.

I wanted it for two reasons. I wanted the board to know what problems we were facing, in
