did and said I understood why he had wanted me to watch it, and I was sorry I wasn't there, because I understood the importance of this particular thing to him. And that's when he said: “Call me back after you get home.”
And, of course, I couldn't get through to him when I got home. Everybody in the world was trying to get through to him. So I left word that I had called. He called me about, I think, 1:30 in the morning and said: “I want you down here at 7:30 to go to Chicago with me.”
So I trundled off to bed, and got ahold of my pilots and got them to get the plane ready to take me down there. They said: “We can't land at Andrews Air Force Base.” Because, you know, this was a tight security period.
I couldn't tell them why, and I said: “If we get airborne and you check, I think we can land at Andrews.”
We no more than took off from Laguardia than my pilot came back into the back part of the plane, almost ashen, and he said: “I just had an order from Andrews that I was to land there and that you're meeting the president.” And he was [shakes hands and fingers]. Like this, you know.
I said: “Yes, that's right.”
My pilot said: “Well, why didn't you tell me.”
I said: “I didn't think I could disclose that until you got the instructions.” We did land at
