on the building, because I wanted help. I had Lew Dorfsman [?], who was the art director for the broadcast group [and] Adrian Murphy, who was sort of a senior executive and had worked for an architectural firm at one time--the big design firm. I can't recall the name of it, but it had good taste. And if they didn't agree between them on something, then I was to be the “lucky Pierre” and have to break the tie.
So I said to Bill, “Let me try it out on Lew.” I picked up the phone and I called Lew and I said, “The proposal has been made that maybe instead of doing dark granite, we ought to do pink granite. What do you think?”
He said: “I think it's shit--” [laughter] and something else. I pressed the phone against my head.
I said: “Thanks a lot” and hung up.
Paley said: “What did he say?” [laughter]
I said, “I don't think he likes it.”
He said: “Well, how do you feel about it?”
I said: “Bill, I just don't think it's going to work.”
He said: “Okay, then just don't ever tell Babe that we talked about it.” So that was the end of that.
