So I said to this man, “Well, look, I don't want all of this. I just want the cards that came back from Lycoming County.”
Well, I could have said “From Mars.” He didn't know where Lycoming County was. And he said, “Well, go on over and take anything you want.”
And I said, “Well, gee, what time do you close?”
And he said, “Well, we're getting out of here now. You can't stay around.”
And I said, “Well, gee, this is a monumental job to find Pennsylvania, and then to find Lycoming County.”
“Well,” he said, “Stay as long as you want. Just turn out the lights.”
Oh, gosh.
Ruth worked with me until quite late in the evening. I think we left there around nine o'clock. No food. Couldn't get out of the building because all the doors were locked. We had to get a night watchman who wondered what we were doing there anyway. And we got out. But before I left I said to the night watchman, “I haven't finished my work. And is the building open tomorrow?” “Oh,” he said, “Sure. Just come in.”
