might come up. My recollection is that it was the composition of the News Executive Committee. And we would talk -- if any of us had criticism about a particular broadcast policywise, or, even for that matter, subject matterwise, it was talked about at the meeting. Advanced planning on documentaries was described and talked about. And that's how I kept in touch with “CBS Reports.” Your question had to do with, did I keep in touch with “CBS Reports” -- even in addition to the Executive Committee. I would, from time to time, touch base either with Mickelson or Friendly about what was coming up or how things were going and so forth.

I don't think there was ever a documentary in television, CBS television, that I didn't know about on the network. Now, I didn't know about that particular “See It Now” broadcast on McCarthy, because it was Murrow and Friendly who had decided not to let anybody know they were working on it for fear it would leak. At least that was the rationale that came to Paley and me about why we didn't know about it prior to that. But both Bill and I had the confidence in Fred and in Ed that they knew our policies and they were responsible producers. Sure, it would have been better, I suppose, if we had known it. But I'm not sure, looking back, what I would have done differently than I did anyway.

Q:

Well, I think that's actually probably a good place for us to wind up today.

Stanton:

I'm going to come over and throw my arms around you.

[laughter]

Q:

Oh, good. Now you have to do it now that you've said it on tape. We have gone a bit long.
