Building in California is different than building in Manhattan. And while I had buildings built for CBS in other locations, I hadn't anything built like this in California, which was sort of a California ranch-type architecture. But we quickly sketched out on the back of an envelope, so to speak, what we needed. Wurster went to work on doing the plans, we went to work on negotiating with Stanford, and made a lease arrangement where they gave us the land and gave us permission to remove the buildings that were on the land in exchange for a deal that let them come back and have ownership of the property at the end of ten years, at which time we would lease the property from Stanford at a going rate.

Q:

What was the architecture that you had in mind?

Stanton:

What was the architecture?

Q:

What was the architecture -- since we don't have a -- visually, it's--

Stanton:

Well, you can't put it on tape.

Q:

Describe it a bit in terms of your needs.

Stanton:

These were one story frame redwood buildings, arranged in -- not in a quadrangle, but in a very comfortable way on a hilltop, not touching any of the vegetation or the trees because the trees were lovely, and we fitted a very attractive L-shaped, as I recall, maybe T- shaped because I don't have the plan clearly in my head now, structure -- one story -- couple
