Prof. Michael Sheetz awarded the 2013 Massry Prize

Mike SheetzCongratulations to Prof. Michael Sheetz, who has been awarded the 2013 Massry Prize, along with James A. Spudich and Ronald Vale, for their work defining the molecular mechanisms of ‘intracellular motility.' This process involves moving cargo from one area to another inside the cell, along pathways that are part of the cytoskeleton. The trio is being honored, in particular, for their discovery of a novel family of motor proteins known as kinesins. The methods they developed to discover and investigate kinesins have now been used by labs around the world to make further exciting discoveries.

The Meira and Shaul G Massry Foundation awards the Massry Prize "to recognize outstanding contributions to the biomedical sciences and the advancement of health." Nine recipients of this prize have gone on to win the Nobel Prize.

Congratulations, Mike!
