Q:

You were not-refresh--you have the list in front of you. Fuerbringer was chosen in what year?

Heiskell:

Sixty.

Q:

Sixty. Were you involved in that selection at all?

Heiskell:

Oh, probably only in passing. I think--no, as a matter of fact, now that I look at it, seems to me that Fuerbringer was made managing editor even before I was made chairman. Or about the same time. So I was not.

Q:

Were you involved in the choice of Grunwald?

Heiskell:

In the choice of Grunwald, yes. Because then Hedley and I--Harry had died, and Hedley and I were discussing who it would be. And I'm trying to remember who the other candidate was. I think it might have been Louis Banks, but I'm not quite positive. But Henry had gained enormous ascendancy there: starting from copy-boy, he'd become a writer, senior editor, I think executive editor. And I don't really remember there being much of an issue as to whether he should be or shouldn't be. Much of an issue as to whether he should be or shouldn't be was Henry Luce the third.

As publisher. He had succeeded Shepley as publisher of
