job it really was--picked Grunwald. My worry about Grunwald was also that he was somewhat indecisive. He loved to keep all his options open. Time magazine on a Friday night, at midnight, might still be considering three different cover stories that had to close within the next four hours, because Henry couldn't make up his mind. He wanted to wait for something--God, news, or something--to give him the sign as to which one to do. And as editor-in-chief he continued to be somewhat indecisive.

Q:

Go back to Time. When he went upstairs--you have the list there--who became managing editor?

Heiskell:

When he went upstairs, the heir-apparent was a rather unusual fellow. About three or four years before, Ray Cave, who was I think assistant managing editor of Sports Illustrated, was moved over to Time.

Heiskell:

He was moved to Time for several reasons, one of the more important ones being that he was very good at handling illustrations and layout. As a matter of fact, just today we were talking about the editing process and the editors who were good at editing words, and the editors who were good at packaging the product. And he was
