I'm trying to remember who he was running against. Which had something to do with it. He was running against-

Q:

McGovern?

Heiskell:

No, no he was-

Q:

Humphrey.

Heiskell:

Humphrey. He was running against the ill fated Humphrey, who was really being dragged down by Johnson. If it hadn't been for Johnson and Vietnam Humphrey would have won. But Humphrey remained loyal to Johnson on the Vietnam issue. And it was rather strange. He lost because of Vietnam and Nixon won and continued the Johnson policy in Vietnam.

Q:

Where were you? You were chairman at that time. Where were you on Nixon, in that election?

Heiskell:

I always thought there was something funny about Nixon. But I never, never could quite figure what it was that was funny about him. But Humphrey didn't look awfully good either. Although I'm not sure that I didn't vote for him.

Q:

Go on with Vietnam.

Heiskell:

Well, then under Nixon Vietnam really became the sore
