Q:

Were there skeptics within? There's, I'm gonna, I'm not-

Heiskell:

Yes.

Q:

What do you recall within Time, I mean?

Heiskell:

Oh I don't know. I'm not very strong on this. I now realize why. And that is that I was so much more involved in other aspects of Time Inc. at that point that didn't spend hours and days gnawing at that particular bone.

Q:

O.K. I'm not trying to grill something out of you. I'm just gonna try to jog your memory some more. Again this from Prendergast.

Apparently by 1967, according to Prendergast, Donovan began to swing a little bit more towards the skeptics, “Among his Time colleagues, in particular Life Assistant Managing Editor Ralph Graves, Senior Staff Editor Tom Griffith and Chief of Correspendents Dick Clurman.” And he mentioned that he, Donovan had just had a reunion in Vietnam with his son Peter, who had done some Peace Corps work and he was starting to turn. Can you--again, if you were not involved with this then you can't answer the question, but can you recall a turning of the tide at Time?

Heiskell:

I don't think there was a turning of the tide. I think there was a--I think it started with a gradual disillusionment about A.) the war in Vietnam and whether it could be won or not, and B.) and perhaps most importantly, a feeling that the war in Vietnam was
