of him. And what I felt was a gun in there. They were all carrying guns. My last recollection of that meeting is falling over the loud speaker. The meeting was totally disrupted. But we finally did get them out of the place. But it was-

Why were the Peronistas trying to disrupt the meeting?

Heiskell:

Because the free press had, of course, been attacking Peron continuously. And this was his way of responding.

Q:

What was the function of the Inter-American Press Association?

Heiskell:

The function was essentially to try through the press, to restore or maintain some form of democracy in South American countries. And over the years we were always campaigning for freedom of the press. First Amendment rights which they don't have anywhere in Latin America. And we would feel that by banding together we would strengthen each individual newspaper because we would all come to their rescue. If some government went after a newspaper all the other newspapers would report it and, in effect, sort of gang up on the guy who's doing the harm. And it was useful. However, the Latin-Americans are different from us and every time that the continent seemed to be getting reasonably
