And he appointed a lot of very bright young men. I remember one of them was, I couldn't believe it, he was very young and he was a major assistant of his and he was still at Yale Law School. And I said, “How can you be doing both of those?” And he said, “Oh, no problem, we're just going to go back at the end of the year to my exam, you know second year's no problem.” I couldn't believe it. I don't know whether he had hit the bad times or he was partly responsible for the bad times in New York City. He is gorgeous, as any woman will testify. As a matter of fact, at age, what is he, sixty, or sixty-five now, he appears to be even more handsome than he was at age forty-five when I first knew him, forty, or forty-five. He loves to tell stories. He always has. Every time I see him he has a story. I'm trying to remember when he was Mayor. He came before Beame.

Q:

In the early Seventies?

Heiskell:

Yes, early Seventies. Well, of course everything that happened in New York in the early Seventies does not result in anyone being able to say that he was a successful mayor.

Q:

How close were you to him.

Heiskell:

Well, quite close. But, you know, when you're dealing with a political person there aren't very many times when you have just easy chats. It's usually about something or the other that he wants you to do something about. There are very few times that you
