Q:

What do you mean?

Heiskell:

I thought he was the worst scum on earth, an outrage to the country, and how come everybody was so--lacked enough guts to do him in.

Q:

What was Henry Luce's attitude, from what you could tell?

Heiskell:

Oh, he was against him, too. But Harry would get confused, because Harry was anti-communist. So while he knew that Joe was the worst, Joe was anti-communist. Joe was saying there were communists in the State Department. Harry thought that the State Department had lost China, so he had, not mixed feelings, but contradictory views about the situation. I think he felt that he didn't want--he was hoping that the destruction of McCarthy could be done without admitting that there wasn't some sort of a communist something going on. After all, he had had the direct experience of communism through the Chamber issue, and the fact that, you know, even we had been fairly well infiltrated by communists right after the war, too.

Q:

“We” meaning Time, Inc.?

Heiskell:

Time, Inc., yes.

Q:

Who are you referring to?
