Yes, and we goofed.

Q:

What do you remember about that whole--

Heiskell:

I remember the cover story, and I remember his--somebody told me that he had reacted violently, but was going to wait a week before speaking out, so as not to promote the issue. And then he did speak out, and accused us of all sorts of pro-communist leanings. But, you know, he attacked everybody as pro-communist, so you didn't feel particularly But it was a weird situation, because, quite clearly, we were not pro-communist, and to be attacked as harboring communists was rather strange. Q:

--politically, the line certainly of the editor and patron, as you've said, was certainly not communist. You have also said that you were convinced that the Guild was infiltrated by communist organizers more or less. Did--

Heiskell:

Right at the end of the war.

Q:

At the end of the war. So by the time of McCarthyism, this was not the case? In other words, was there ever--

Heiskell:

We continued to have problems with the Guild, but we did not feel that they were, at that point, any more dominated by communist influence.
