T.S. Matthews--I suppose T.S. Matthews really resigned in part because of that. He also went over many other arguments, but you know, people don't usually leave because of just one thing.

Q:

Right--go ahead.

Heiskell:

I'm trying to think about other instances--I'm sure there were other instances.

Q:

Now, wait. I have T.S. Matthews as Time Managing Editor from 1943 to 1949.

Heiskell:

Yes.

Q:

So--were you saying that he resigned over the Stevenson or in general over this political bias situation?

Heiskell:

Matthews was there after 1949. Yes. Because what happened--I don't recall the dates exactly, but--

Oh, maybe he stayed on as editorial director, or something.

Heiskell:

--he was editor--
