Editor-in-Chief--editor of Time, which Harry Luce had, been up till then. And when he made Roy Alexander managing editor, Matthews became editor--

Editor. I see.

Heiskell:

--and it was as editor--one of his functions was to edit the cover story. And I forget what--the fight was over the cover story on Stevenson--I think. Pretty sure.

Q:

O.K. That's good. Continue with this subject. I think it's very important. What other examples come to mind. For example, it's stated--I don't know if this is accurate--that when Donovan was kind of tapped, even before he was named as a successor--but he knew he was going to be--that he protested about the whole question of biased reporting to Luce. Now, does this sound correct to you?

Heiskell:

Yes. Donovan would not have as radical views--I don't mean radical left views, but radical views--on most any subject, as Harry would. Donovan would have wanted, and did moderate Time and LIFE&S opinion quantity by a considerable amount. It was less
