Q:

What about his relationship with Kennedy?

Heiskell:

Well, he was very close to Joe. All along he was very close to Joe, and Joe, as part of his empire-building scheme, made a great point of being very close to Harry. He would invite him to everything. And believe it or not, the night of the election, who was sitting there looking at the TV but Harry and Joe together? Which was really quite extraordinary for this ardent Republican.

Q:

Was it difficult because of his relationship with Joe to come out and endorse Nixon?

Heiskell:

No, because I think our endorsement of Nixon was so mild that old Joe probably said, “Well, I won that one.” [laughs]

Q:

How was Luce affected by Kennedy's death?

Heiskell:

I don't remember. Let's see if I can remember--no, I can't. I don't remember. I was in Miami that day. I'd seen Kennedy the night before he went to Texas, in Miami, and so I wasn't even on the scene.

Q:

What were the circumstances of your seeing him?

Heiskell:

The meeting of the Inter-American Press Association. And he was absolutely extraordinary. He came by, after having done a political act where he shook hands with five hundred people, and he
