Q:

The River Club, you mean?

Heiskell:

No, the building opposite the River Club, this side of the river. He and I would sit out there and discuss--

Q:

That was his apartment, you mean?

Heiskell:

Yes. Discuss the problems of Time Incorporated endlessly. But mostly the memories are of--oh, he would have three or four of his associates over for dinner, and he had some subject on his mind, usually well-prepared, and would expound on it and then expect us to come up with brilliant repartee and answers and so on and so on. Of course, most of us didn't even know what the hell we were asked over for. He had a trick of doing that.

Q:

Would Clare be at those dinners?

Heiskell:

No.

Q:

So he really kept her separate from Time people?

Heiskell:

Yes. I hardly remember seeing Clare in any Time Inc. situation. Obviously, if you went to somebody else's dinner, there would be Harry and Clare there. Or you went to a ball, or something like that, they would both be there. But never, never in the Time Inc. context. Really, really, quite astounding. Because I would imagine that it must have created the most terrible tensions within
