the display cards. This is a period in retailing that no longer exists, where the display window carries a great deal of information about the merchandise on display.

Q:

Oh, I see.

Stanton:

I didn't write all the copy. Although I wrote some of the copy. But the copy was written by others. But I certainly had the responsibility of setting the type, and pulling the proofs and so forth. And even in my, I guess in my senior year, or perhaps between my senior year in high school and my first year in college, I was given the opportunity to redesign the backgrounds for all of the windows, and I went to Chicago to pick out the material for the backgrounds and so forth.

Went to Chicago -- it was my first trip, I went alone. This was pretty heady wine for a senior in high school. None of this suggests that I didn't have a great deal to do in high school in addition to doing what I did after school. But I had a lot of fun and faced a lot of problems as a kid that I later ran into when I got into business.

Such as?

Stanton:

Supervising people, getting along with people under working conditions, selling, not meeting a payroll because I didn't have to do that, but I would guess mainly getting along with people and getting things done without having to have authority in order to get them done.

I guess it was very unusual for you. You must have been the only person your age with
