work was a member of the athletic board of the university. And Ohio State, as you may or may not know, still is and certainly at that time was big on football and athletics --

Q:

Oh sure.

Stanton:

And they wanted to pick their athletes when they were in junior high school, practically, and bring them along. And one of the questions was how do you pre-select kids with skills in various sports? The sport that was in question at that time was fencing; although what we later did also correlated highly with other sports. And how do you pick a fencer out of a hundred kids that have never fenced? What skills can they show early on? And this man came up with the idea of taking a large can, a two quart can I think it was, putting a hole in the bottom of it, putting a piece of very thin tubing up into that hole, putting the can on a swing at the top of the equipment so that the thing would swing this way, fill that with a quart of water, give the prospective kid a little cup and say, “As this swings, catch the water.”

Q:

Right.

Stanton:

Now, that sounds very simple -- except that we would start with a big cup so you could catch all of it. All you had to do then to grade them was to measure the amount of water. And then you had a measure of how well they could coordinate their eyes and their hands. But then we made the cup ultimately just slightly bigger than the spigot so that you had to be right on target. It was one thing to catch it in a bushel basket. It's another thing to catch it in a thimble.
