had only one station on the air and that was New York.

When we came out of the color controversy -- as I've said earlier, there were so many black and white sets out that there was no way to turn back and to go ahead with the color thing from a practical point of view. We had to go ahead with the black and white development in VHF.

Q:

Well, for the record we should just say that the FCC turned down the application for color.

Stanton:

Well, they gave us the go ahead --

Q:

-- initially --

Stanton:

-- but it was an empty bag.

Q:

Oh.

Stanton:

Because this is like the kid who appeals for mercy after he kills his mother and father, saying he is an orphan.

[LAUGHTER]

Q:

What was the empty bag? Explain exactly what the ruling was. What do you mean by the empty bag?
