Stanton:

Oh, that's all a matter of record. Sure.

Q:

I can find that. Yes.

Stanton:

I wasn't eloquent. I was stubborn. But as I say we had good help from the affiliates. I had good legal representation.

Q:

Who were your legal representatives?

Stanton:

Lloyd Cutler was a Washington counsel. We had our own Law Department which was very strong in helping. I went about the country trying to enlist support from press organizations, everybody I could muster, because this was a do or die situation. And it was so bad that the Sunday before the vote was taken -- I didn't know the vote was about to be taken -- but the Sunday before it went to the Floor, the dean of the Congress, of the House, Manny [Emanuel] Celler, called me personally and pleaded with me to find something to accommodate the demands of Harley Staggers, because Manny Celler said, “He is a respected member of Congress. He's one of the senior chairmen. And while you've got friends in Congress, most of the members will vote against you along party lines and out of respect for the chairman of the committee. And you've got a lot of detractors who think it won't hurt to cut you down to size. So find something that you can do to get Harley off your back.”

And I said to Manny, “This disturbs me deeply that you are asking me to compromise because I don't see how you can compromise the First Amendment.”
