Stanton:

I was tempted. I think in the end I would have declined. I'm not a heavy industry type person, and GE was very deep into military contracts and heavy industry. I think there is a culture in General Electric that can be characterized, perhaps a little cruelly, if it's made of iron and painted grey and bolted to the floor, it's a product for GE. The background from which I came was anything but that.

Q:

Right. Were there any other acquisition offers from anyone else other than GE to buy the stock of CBS?

Stanton:

None that I recall. At this time, there were some that I tried to initiate --

Q:

Such as?

Stanton:

-- unsuccessfully. What?

Q:

Such as?

Stanton:

I flirted -- or I didn't flirt -- I had some direct conversations with IBM, and there was real interest at IBM at that time. But their lawyers felt that the Department of Justice would probably block it and we didn't press it beyond that point.

Q:

Was this also in the fifties?

Stanton:

I'm sorry?
