And I said, “Well, his papers are here.”
He said, “I know but he just walked out.”
And then I discovered his coat was -- I think his coat was still there, his topcoat. I'm not sure about that. But his papers were there and I went out into the hall where I thought he had gone. We had arranged for each of them to have a little suite of rooms for their own personal requirements with staff and so forth. And I went back to that room and was told that he never came back. And then I found a Secret Service man who said he'd just walked right on straight out and got in his car and that was it.
While I was doing that, obviously Jack had gone to his little suite of rooms. I wanted to go back to his room to express my thanks to him. I walked down this long hall. And I knew where the room was because I could tell where the Secret Service and the cops were all standing outside the door. The door was open and I looked in and one of the people inside motioned me in. There were no press in there at all at that point because the press was in another part of the building. And I believe it was Bobby who motioned me in, I'm not sure. But the configuration of the rooms was such that there was a doorway between the room that I was walking into -- and Jack was in the next room. And the door into the hallway for that room had been locked so that the only way you could get in was through the side. When I went in -- and I hesitated because he was on the phone and I -- when Jack saw me, he motioned me in, and held the phone on his shoulder while he stuck out his hand and shook hands with me. And I noticed his sleeve was wet all the way up almost beyond the elbow on both sleeves from perspiration. He motioned for me to sit down. The room was lighted with
