COMMUNITY PEDIATRICS CONCENTRATION: OVERVIEW

Community Pediatrics offers a special concentration for those residents with a particular interest in community health, cultural competency, and child advocacy.

We select two-three residents per year, depending on interest. By the end of the three years of residency, those who participate in the concentration will have had an in-depth, longitudinal experience and will be expected to demonstrate skills in the areas of community health, cultural competence, and child advocacy. These individuals will serve as peer leaders and as a nucleus of energy for our community pediatrics-training program.

The enhanced curriculum includes the following:
• Additional block rotations dedicated to community pediatrics.
• An independent project in a chosen community health-related area of interest. Each resident completing the concentration will choose a mentor from the faculty of the Division of General Pediatrics with whom he/she will work closely through the three years. In addition, appropriate mentors may be selected from leaders of community–based organizations, faculty from related disciplines in the University, and/or other experts in community health and child advocacy.
• Opportunities to present work at regional or national meetings.

In addition to the above, we meet as a group three times a year for dinner, discussion, and camaraderie.
