AMBULATORY BLOCK
The overarching goals are as stated in training overview.
This month will focus on Legislative Advocacy,
Maternal Child Health and Communication Skills. You will also
learn about the pediatrician's role in health eduation in community
settings.
Legislative Advocacy:
By the end of this month pediatric residents will:
• Develop an awareness of legislative advocacy as it relates
to children’s health issues
• Learn to effectively develop and disseminate an advocacy
message
• Present at a noon conference a current children’s
health legislative advocacy topic

Maternal Child Health:
You will have an opportunity to learn
about domestic violence and its impact on child health, participate
in a group well child care visit and perform a home visit with
a faculty member.

Communication Skills:
This month you will learn about health
literacy and motivational interviewing, two key aspects on good
Doctor/patient communication
---Health Literacy:
By the end of this month pediatric residents will:
• Develop an understanding of Health Literacy and its impact
on patient care
• Be able to assess the Health Literacy of patient handouts
using a SMOG readability test
• Implement the HEAL (Health Education and Adult Literacy)
curriculum in primary care patient waiting room

---Motivational Interviewing:
By the end of this month pediatric residents will:
• Learn Motivational Interviewing
and how to incorporate it in to their practices
• Practice “Motivational Interviewing” techniques
used to effect behavior change
Community-Based Health Education:
This month is an opportunity for residents to develop
their skills as health educators in community
settings. By the end of the month, pediatric residents will have
visited:
