Faculty Desktop Support
Faculty Desktop Support (FDS) currently provides on-site desktop and laptop support for the social sciences and humanities faculty of the Arts and Sciences at Columbia University. Assistance will be provided by appointment on a first come, first served basis. When requesting assistance, please indicate times you might be available at your computer for help. Upon receiving your request, FDS will contact you as soon as possible, the same day in most cases, to set up an appointment.

Computer Purchases
As a member of Columbia University, Arts and Sciences faculty and staff are eligible for educational discounts for computer purchases with Dell, Apple and other Columbia preferred vendors.
Recommended Systems: Users are recommended to choose the Operating System with which they are most comfortable. However, Arts and Sciences recommends one of the following:
- Microsoft Windows XP, which is compatible with Columbia's enterprise applications.
- Mac OS X [Note: All currently available Apple Macintosh models use Intel processors. A benefit of the Intel chip is that Macs - in addition to Mac OS X- are capable of running Windows XP/Vista, Linux and other Unix flavors via virtualization software such as Boot Camp, Parallels, VMWare, etc.]

For Apple computer purchases, please visit Apple's Custom Store for the Arts and Sciences. Apple offers a customized online store offering systems to the staff and faculty of the Arts and Sciences at a substantial discount over and above the education discount on selected computer bundles.
