Alexandra Lerman

Alexandra Lerman (b.1980 St. Petersburg, Russia) interweaves documentary and fiction to map the shared territory of imperialism and romanticism. Lerman adopts the persona of Mikhail Lermontov, 19th-century Russian Romantic poet and officer in the Caucasian War (1817-1864). She examines cultural memory through a retracing of Lermontov's journey to reframe his mythic persona in relation to a post-Soviet narrative, and the recent conflicts in Chechnya and Georgia within a larger history of imperial conflict. A 2004 Cooper Union graduate, Lerman has shown at Artists Space, MUSAC, the Hermitage, Janos Gat Gallery and Austrian Cultural Forum, among others. www.alexandralerman.com
