W1130y - Genes and Development

Course Description:

Prerequisites: Either BIOL C1015 or AP biology or instructor's permission. This course covers selected topics in genetics and development, with special emphasis on issues that are relevant to contemporary society. Lectures and readings will provide students with the scientific knowledge to understand how genes regulate development, and how alterations in genes lead to abnormal development and disease. Interspersed workshops will allow students to research and discuss the ethical and societal impact of specific topics (e.g. in vitro fertilization, steroid use, and stem cell therapy).
