Mining the Nanoscale for New Materials

Our newest faculty member assembles nanoscale molecular clusters into materials with desirable physical properties.

Nature fabricates the materials of our world from the 90 or so naturally occurring elements. In the research lab of new assistant professor Xavier Roy, novel materials are assembled from molecular cluster ‘superatoms’.

Symposium Honors Professor Turro

A symposium and an announcement of a permanent tribute honors the life and work of Professor Turro.

The memory of beloved former Professor Nicholas Turro, who passed away last Nov. 29, was celebrated on May 11 at a symposium and reception on the Columbia campus.

Matching Fund Established for
Turro Graduate Fellowship

The department of chemistry and GSAS are pleased to announce that we are raising funds for the Nicholas Turro Memorial Fund.  If we reach a goal of $500,000. by December 31, 2013, these funds will be matched (1.5:1) by a generous gift from John Kluge (CC'37), forming an endowment that will allow us to annually grant a full scholarship in Nick's memory for the chemistry Ph.D. student who most excels in teaching, research, and building the community of the department.  If we reach a goal of $100,000. by December 31, 2013, the  funds will be matched (1:1) by  the Kluge gift, and will form an endowment that will allow us to grant a partial scholarship in Nick's memory. We already have a few early gifts in hand, including a generous gift from Harry and Shirley Gray, but we will certainly need your help to make this a fitting memorial to Nick.   Please write checks payable to “Columbia University,” and mail them to the attention of:
