ARE YOU INTERESTED IN CHEMICAL RESEARCH?

It’s Never Too Early To Start!

I.  Undergraduate Research Internships during the ACADEMIC YEAR

More than 5,000 internships open to Columbia University undergraduates every year.  You can seek professional guidance from the University’s Center for Career Education.
See Internships & Resources:
http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/university/academic/internships.php

II. Volunteering in a Research Laboratory during the ACADEMIC YEAR

Faculty in the Department of Chemistry carry out fundamental and applied research at both the core and frontiers of this scientific discipline.  There are many opportunities for conducting research during the academic year; some students start as early as their freshman year.  Descriptions of faculty research programs are presented at the Department web site:  http://www.columbia.edu/cu/chemistry/.  If you are interested in working in a research laboratory, you may contact a Faculty member directly, or, consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor James J. Valentini ([email protected], 212-854-7590).

III.  Chemistry-Related SUMMER Undergraduate Research Programs at  Columbia University

There are a number of summer research programs that enable undergraduate students to conduct research under the guidance of Faculty in the Department of Chemistry.  For firm deadlines, consult the program websites.

Deadline:  Late February to Early March, 2008
Eligibility:  Open to undergraduate students (in physical science and engineering majors) who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), Dept. of Biological Sciences
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/biology/ug/surf/
    Deadline:  Early February, 2008
Eligibility:  Open to students who are currently a junior, sophomore, or first-year student in Columbia College, Barnard College, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, or the School of General Studies. No previous research experience is necessary and you do not need to be a biology major.

Columbia University/Barnard College Amgen Scholars Summer Research Program

Deadline:  Early March, 2008.
Eligibility: The FOSTOR program is intended for Frontiers of Science students who arrive in the course either unsure of their major or sure it will not be science and who develop sufficient interest to devote a summer to further exploration of the physical, mathematical, or engineering sciences.

RABI Scholars Program
http://rabi.columbia.edu/
Deadline:  See internal deadlines.
Eligibility:  Columbia College has initiated the Rabi Scholars Program in memory of 1944 Nobel Laureate and Columbia physics faculty member I. I. Rabi. About ten incoming first year students who demonstrate exceptional promise in the sciences are chosen to be Rabi Scholars, a designation retained for their four years at Columbia College. This distinction guarantees summer research jobs with free summer housing on campus, as well as other benefits.

IV.  Off-Campus SUMMER Undergraduate Research Opportunities

There are many summer research opportunities available to undergraduate students outside of Columbia University, in either academic or industrial settings.  The following urls provide links to a number of these programs, though the listings are by no means exhaustive.
