Stanton:

-- although we did get some people supporting us. And a lot of people angry that we'd put it on the air. It depended on which side of the McCarthy issue you were identified with.

Q:

Did you conduct any kind of surveys --

Stanton:

Yes, we did some public opinion study very quickly to find out -- first to find out who saw the broadcast and if they saw it what their reactions were. The kinds of things that you'd want to do if you were concerned about the public's response to the broadcast. I think more people said they saw it than had seen it. But for people who didn't see it, we asked them whether they had heard about it. And there were people who weren't clear whether they'd heard about it or whether they'd seen it. And then we tried to get reactions and information about it from the audience at large. Yes. Sure.

Q:

What were the results from that content-wise? I mean, was Murrow seen as pro- Communist by anybody because he did the broadcast?

Stanton:

Oh, sure. Because McCarthy referred to CBS as the Communist Broadcasting Systems -- that's what CBS stood for. I got mail addressed to me as president of the Communist Broadcasting System. Oh, sure.

Q:

Was it a large percentage of people who felt this way about Murrow?

Stanton:

Not a large percent but a large number, because a small percent of the total number of people in the country is still a large amount -- that's a lot of mail.
