Q:

That's excellent.

Stanton:

What?

Q:

Not only the names but the spelling of the names.

Stanton:

Then there were others added. I put -- later on the board -- I invited Don [Donald C.] Cook to serve. Don was a chief financial officer type. At the time I invited him on the board, he was Chairman of the Board of American Electric Power. But he had been deeply involved in Washington affairs. And Lyndon Johnson in my presence begged him to become Secretary of the Treasury and so forth. A dedicated public servant and a brilliant financial man. And I wanted Don on the board, not only because of his public service record and interest, but because I knew we had to put together money for -- hoping to get endowment for the Center and so forth.

I went into the job with the idea that we would make it sing for, let's say, ten years and then decide whether it deserved to be kept alive after that time. The vicissitudes of starting something like this weren't insurmountable but they took more of my time than I had to give to it. It created problems at home. It created problems in my normal business affairs.

Q:

What do you mean exactly? Just because of the time it took?

Stanton:

Time. Time.
