the line among his business associates, both in the company and out, that he had decided not to invite anybody from the corporate family, which obviously meant that we weren't going to be invited. He didn't know how greatly I was relieved. It broke Ralph Colin's heart. Ralph Colin knew Bill from before there was a CBS. No, after. Ralph Colin knew Bill from about the time that Bill came into radio. He was very close to him, and indeed had been involved in some of the scrapes that Bill had with women and so forth. He got him his divorce and felt that he was very close. He was excluded from the wedding list as well. Indeed, Ralph was so affected, that the day of the wedding, at the hour of the wedding, Ralph came to my office and said, “Shouldn't we have a drink to the Paleys?” It was something that surprised me, but nevertheless did indicate the depth of his feeling about that. And the fact that Paley was totally insensitive to Ralph's feelings.
Was anybody there from CBS? Was Murrow there?
What I wanted to come to was that when the pictures came back -- I guess they were stills. He asked me if I would take care of getting some prints made for him and so forth. There was Ed Murrow. Bill didn't say anything to me about it. I don't think Bill looked upon Ed as being a part of the company. I think he looked upon Ed as almost the closest personal friend he had. I don't think anyone in the war years was as close to Bill as Ed was. I guess being a behaviorist and growing up in that discipline, I read it for what the facts were and didn't let the emotions get in the way of it. Although I must indicate that when Ralph came in and made such a to-do about having a drink, I thought maybe I should be more upset about this than I was. Ralph never forgave Bill for not taking him into his social life. Ed Klauber never forgave Bill for it. Ed Klauber told me after Klauber left CBS -- or after he was fired, really. After I was made president, he asked me to come by his
