3rd USA Science & Engineering Festival Expo
April 26-27, 2014We are proud to be an Official Partner of the 3rd USA Science & Engineering Festival, held in Washington, D.C. in April 2014. USASEF is free to the public and is the largest science festival in the U.S., with over 3,000 exhibits and more than 280,000 people in attendance this year. Supported in part by EGSC, we were able to send seven club members to participate in the event. We hosted an exhibit on structure-function relationships in scaffold design for musculoskeletal tissue engineering which we presented to over 300 future scientists and their families.
Young Alumni Networking Panel
April 24, 2014Our chapter hosted a panel discussion featuring five recent Columbia alumni working in biomedical and related industries:

- Stephen Leong, M.S. from the Department of Defense
- Ludguier Montejo, Ph.D. from American Express
- Marissa Solomon, Ph.D. from L'Oreal
- Ryan Van Echo, M.S. from UMT Consulting
The panelists discussed their perspectives on careers and their experiences in different industry positions following graduation. The event was attended by over 40 undergraduate and graduate students from various departments, including Applied Physics and Applied Math, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, and Mechanical Engineering.
Industry Career Discussion with Stryker Orthopaedics
April 10, 2014Our chapter hosted engineers Dr. Zongtao Zhang, Dr. Naomi Murray, and Walter Schmidt from Stryker Orthopaedics. The speakers discussed how modeling and simulation is used to evaluate orthopaedic implant structural performance, biomaterial use and how Stryker is utilizing additive manufacturing processes in implant design, as well as career opportunities in industry. We were joined by undergraduate and graduate students in Applied Physics and Applied Math, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering & Operations Research, Mechanical Engineering
Engineering Exploration Experience
March 29, 2014In collaboration with the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), our chapter hosted 18 young women scientists and engineers who learned about hydrogels for tissue engineering, and participated in interactive demonstrations on histology and confocal microscopy.
Roundtable Discussion with Health Science Communications
March 4, 2014Our chapter hosted an informal roundtable discussion with Kenneth Ng, PhD, MSCTI and Evelyn Yao, PhD from Health Science Communications. Dr. Ng and Dr. Yao discussed the transition from academia to health communications with graduate students in Applied Physics and Applied Math, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, and Pharmacology
Science Fair at Dual Language Middle School
January - February 2014From January 6th through 16th, our chapter hosted 7th and 8th graders from Dual Language Middle School and worked with them to design and carry out experiments for their annual science fair projects. SFB members also volunteered as judges at the DLMS Science Fair in February.
Regeneron Site Visit
November 22, 2013Our chapter hosted a site visit to Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in Tarrytown, NY. We were joined by Masters students, Ph.D. students, and postdocs from Applied Physics and Applied Math, Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Earth and Environmental Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
Bowling Social
