4th USA Science & Engineering Festival Expo
April 16-17, 2016We are proud to be an Official Partner of the 4th USA Science & Engineering Festival, held in Washington, D.C. in April 2016. USASEF is free to the public and is the largest STEM festival in the U.S., with over 3,000 exhibits and more than 350,000 people in attendance this year. Supported in part by EGSC, we were able to send seven club members to participate in the event. We hosted an exhibit on structure-function relationships in bone and musculoskeletal scaffold design which we presented to over 300 future scientists and their families.
Young Entrepreneurs Panel
March 15 2016Our chapter hosted a panel discussion on entrepreneurship featuring a Columbia graduate student, post-doctoral fellow, alumnus, and faculty member:
- Mike Lamprecht, Ph.D.: Research Scientist at EpiBone
- Timothy Kernan: Ph.D. candidate and Entrepreneurial Lead at Ironic Chemicals
- Katherine Reuther, Ph.D.: Lecutrer in Biomedical Engineering, Columbia-Coulter Translational Research Partnership
- Alessandro Marone, Ph.D.: Post-doctoral fellow, Jalali Translational Fellows Program
The panelists discussed their perspectives on the start-up world, including their experiences with funding, hiring, and mentorship. The event was attended by graduate students from various departments.
Science Fair at Dual Language Middle School
January - February 2016From January 5th through 14th, our chapter hosted 8th graders from Dual Language Middle School and worked with them to design and carry out experiments for their annual science fair projects. SFB members also volunteered as judges at the DLMS Science Fair in February.
Industry Career Discussion with Health Science Communications
October 14, 2015Our chapter hosted an industry career discussion with Columbia alum Kenneth Ng, PhD, MSCTI from Health Science Communications. Dr. Ng discussed the transition from academia to health communications and we were joined by graduate students in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering & Operations Research, and Mechanical Engineering
Science Club at Dual Language Middle School
October 2015 - May 2015Throughout the school year, our chapter is hosting monthly visits to Dual Language Middle School to teach the after-school science club. Our goal is to introduce hands-on activities to complement the subjects covered in their classes. This year we have explored topics ranging from the properties of matter to biomaterials fabrication.
