Stryker Orthopaedics Site Visit
April 30, 2015Our chapter hosted a site visit to Stryker Orthopaedics in Mahwah, NJ, where we toured the manufacturing plant and Advanced Technologies facilities, and learned about Stryker's latest implant designs. We were joined by 11 M.S. and Ph.D. students.
Harlem Biospace Networking Happy Hour
April 24, 2015Our chapter sponsored a networking happy hour with member companies of Harlem Biospace. We were joined by graduate students from various departments and representatives from 10 of the Harlem Biospace member companies.
SFB Biomaterials Education Challenge
April 16, 2015Our chapter participated in this year's Biomaterials Education Challenge at the Annual Meeting of the Society For Biomaterials in Charlotte, NC, where our project "Exploring Structure-Function Relationships in Scaffold Design" won 1st place!
Science Club at Dual Language Middle School
August 2014 - May 2015Throughout the school year, our chapter has been hosting monthly visits to Dual Language Middle School to teach the after-school science club. Our goal was to introduce hands-on activities to complement the subjects covered in their classes. This year we have done activities ranging from growing our own rock candy crystals to making brains using sand and potato flakes!
Science Fair at Dual Language Middle School
January - February 2015From January 6th through 15th, our chapter hosted 8th graders from Dual Language Middle School and worked with them to design and carry out experiments for their annual science fair projects. SFB members also volunteered as judges at the DLMS Science Fair in February.
Post-Doc Panel
November 19, 2014Our chapter hosted a panel discussion featuring three Columbia alumni and post-docs pursuing postdoctoral research in biomedical and related fields:
- Andrew Baik, Ph.D. (Biomedical Engineering): Regeneron Pharmaceuticals
- Arend Van Der Zande, Ph.D. (Physics): Columbia University Department of Mechanical Engineering
- Yaron Levinson, Ph.D. (Control, Signal Processing and Optimization): Cornell Tech
The panelists discussed their perspectives on careers and their experiences in different post-doc positions following graduation. The event was attended by graduate students from various departments.
Industry Speaker: Ke Cheng, Ph.D. (HistoWiz)
October 29, 2014Our chapter hosted Dr. Ke Cheng, founder and CEO of HistoWiz. Dr. Cheng discussed her path to starting HistoWiz, a histology service company, and some of the challenges of entrepreneurship in biotechnology. We were joined by undergraduate and graduate students from various departments.
