Reading Proficiency Examinations
Reading Proficiency Examinations in Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan are offered twice every fall and spring semester to graduate students from and outside the department (see exception below)* who need to show research proficiency in a language as part of their program requirements.
The two-hour exam is based on the translation into English of a scholarly text approximately two pages in length. Exam takers may bring a dictionary. You must register to sit for the test by calling the department at (212) 854-4187 or by emailing Kosmas Pissakos at kp124@columbia.edu
The Fall 2009 Reading Proficiency Exams in Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan will be held on:
Friday, September 25, 2009, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
Friday, November 6, 2009, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Note to SIPA graduate students: You must take the SIPA proficiency exam and should consult your department for more information. SIPA students may take the Columbia Spanish placement exam prior to the SIPA proficiency exam in order to gauge their level of Spanish.
