Osmond

Dear Students

Thank you for considering Columbia University's Biosphere 2 Center, near Tucson, Arizona, in your future academic plans. I invite you to explore the opportunities afforded by the natural diversity and the community of scholars at our incredibly beautiful high desert campus.

The glass and steel dome that is Biosphere 2 Laboratory has been transformed into an icon, a remarkable prototype apparatus for discovering the role plants and other systems play in sustaining planet Earth. The campus is increasingly recognized as a premier location, worldwide, for education and research devoted to deeper understanding of Earth systems--understanding that is vital to policies and decisions that will affect Earth's future.

The opening and closing of each day at Biosphere 2 presents a superb display of color and texture on the nearby peaks and canyons of the Santa Catalina Mountains, with the spectacle of the Sonoran Desert drawing the eye to Kitt Peak and beyond. What better setting in which to explore the universe's past and Earth's future?

Why not join us at Biosphere 2 for a semester or during the summer? Why not prepare yourself for a role in meeting the truly awesome challenges that confront Earth early this millennium? Why not immerse yourself in our Earth and Universe programs and discover, hands-on, the things that matter for future humankind on planet Earth?

Take a chance. Do something totally different. Not only will your experience at Biosphere 2 have lasting impact on your education, it may make a difference for our planet.

Yours sincerely,

Professor Barry Osmond
