S. R. Faruqi on Ghalib's best verses

In the FIRST column of the chart below are the ghazal numbers that I use in this website, the number of verses published, and the whole number of verses originally composed in each case.

In the SECOND column of the chart are the 138 verses Faruqi discusses in FARUQI: tafhiim-e ;Gaalib (New Delhi: Ghalib Institute, 1989), and the 150 verses he discusses in the new 2006 edition. In this partial commentary he concentrates on verses he thinks the commentators have misunderstood. The numbers in square brackets are those assigned by Faruqi; they will make it easier to use the book, which has no verse index.

The list of verses in the THIRD column of the chart is drawn from FARUQI 2: inti;xaab-e urduu kulliyaat-e ;Gaalib (New Delhi: Sahitya Academy, 1993; 2nd ed., 1999). These are the verses that Faruqi included in own his 'selection' or inti;xaab -- the ones he thought were the finest in the published divan, and also the very best from the unpublished verses.

In the FOURTH column are Faruqi's general recommendations from among the unpublished verses. They are here shown by the first word or two, with their page numbers in Raza's collection ('R'). All of them are also included in Dr. Gyan Chand's commentary ('GC'). These recommendations were given to me by Faruqi himself in 1980. I'm glad to be able to share them with others.
